Antique Persian Heriz
Vegetable-dyed Heriz, sun-faded along one length. Selective hand re-tint and rewoven warp on the weakened end.
For more than a decade, the Cohen family has hand-washed and restored rugs across the Northeast — antique Persian, oriental, silk, French Aubusson, and more. The selection below is a small set of recent before-and-after pairs from the atelier, drawn from collectors' homes and from the rooms of designers we work with. Every piece was washed by hand on our floor and returned in better condition than the day it left.
Vegetable-dyed Heriz, sun-faded along one length. Selective hand re-tint and rewoven warp on the weakened end.
Silk Qum with prior dye bleed. Slow individual wash, pH-balanced soap, flat-dried over four days.
Workshop Tabriz, twenty years between washes. Hand-washed alone; fringes rebound by hand to match original tension.
Classic Kashan with selvedge fray on one side. Wash, selective re-knot of foundation, edge bound back to weave.
Aubusson after a leak. Slow controlled bath to stabilise the dyes, then four days flat-dried on slatted frames.
Iron-rug of Persia with moth-eaten corner. Larvae cleared, foundation rewoven by hand, pile knotted to match.
Sun-faded Sarouk on a burgundy ground. Light-fast hand re-tint, selectively applied to recover depth without flooding.
Fine Isfahan with pet damage along one edge. Hand-washed individually, edge rewoven, pile colour-matched.
Long runner, vegetable-dyed, dirty after two decades. Antique wash performed slowly to lift soil without lifting dye.
Ivory-ground Nain with delicate floral drawing. Hand wash with cool water, fringes rebound to original length.
Kerman with pastel palette that another cleaner had refused. Every colour dye-tested first, washed cooler and slower.
Single-wefted Malayer with localised moth damage. Treated by hand, foundation rewoven to original tension.
A few of the rugs we've cared for — and the families who trusted us with them.
“They returned an heirloom Tabriz — the colors look exactly as my grandmother described them.”
“A 1920s Heriz I thought was beyond saving came back better than the day my parents bought it.”
“Our clients trust us with eight-figure homes. Horizon is the only atelier I send their rugs to.”
